I haven’t but I’d quite like to. Nuclear power plants are amazing facilities and I’d quite like to work on them in the future.

In particular I’d like to work on a nuclear fusion power plant. I think fusion power is the future and getting involved in that would be amazing. The science behind them is fascinating and I’d love to help improve them.

I haven’t been to a Nuclear power plant either, but I have a friend that works for one. They have very tight security so that not just anyone can enter and you have to let them know you are coming in advance so they can do a security check on you.

I guess there is a trend here: I have never visited a power plant either!

I have, however, visited a few research reactors, like at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble (France) or at the Study Center for Nuclear Energy SCK-CEN in Mol (Belgium). In those places, they use the reactors to produce neutrons that are then sent down different rooms to perform nuclear and material science research, or to place samples within the reactor’s core to test their response to the high radiation level or to create new radioactive material. Those were quite fascinating visits!

I know that ILL organises frequent visits for students and it is not too far from CERN (in Geneva), so if you come down for a visit, you may think of joining both together!
